Plastic Bags...

I remember the day I won Bob at a local funfair
He was a very cute goldfish with two odd eyes
His colouring was of the richest golden orange
As he peered through the clear plastic carry bag
He seemed to be mouthing a warning back at me
I wondered how he would adapt to his new world
Living under the constant scrutiny of observation
Private pond life offered a tended environment
Where fish can exist free from industrial pollutants
Since most rivers and oceans are now contaminated
Sea life and mammals poisoned by plastic particles
Hedgerows and birds entangled with plastic shreds
Swans and ducks choked by plastic can coverings
The time has come to carry goldfish home in a jar …

  1. Well said. Just thinking about one fish and how we carry him connects to the entire world of abuse of plastic. Every little bit counts.

  2. I think it is now time to think about survival rather than profit. Sadly the more money one has the more difficult it is to see and understand...anything!

  3. Oh the list of affected creatures hurts my heart. Here, we have whales dying in large numbers and washing ashore, their bellies full of plastic.

  4. So sad that the only safe place for the goldfish is a jar as we destroyed his natural environment. Soon we can ask where do we have to go?

  5. Yes the time has come. Either we be responsible or perish. My God! How can we pollute a whole planet? Such stupidity! Love the sweet image of carrying a goldfish in a jar.

  6. You render vivid images here, I can almost see and hear the goldfish mouthing a warning. I agree, with your last line. It is time, indeed. Brilliant write!
