This
same festive time of every year
Returns me back to days long gone
Scents and smells of home cooking
Christmas cakes and fruit puddings
Lovingly baked and nicely decorated
It was the very best of feelgood spirit
Anticipation of the season had begun
Excitement as decorations were hung
Christmas gifts under the sparkly tree
I loved childhood days of innocence
A magical warmth savoured so well
Times now seen through reminiscence…
I love the rewards found with words, especially when they fall into a poetic arrangement. Neither taut nor prescribed; but rather the beauty and the truth of the message, seen in observation and lived through experience..

Reminiscence...
Eileen T O’Neill 14th December 2023
Christmas did seem magical back then....and then again, when our kids were young.......wonderful memories. I so enjoyed your poem, Eileen.
ReplyDeleteI loved the anticipation of Christmas as children, the unparalleled excitement. The sights and smells, indeed!
ReplyDeleteIndeed so true, Eileen. What I remember from childhood is all of the cookies my mother used to bake. I would HELP her sometime, but she did the majority of the work. So many varieties. Sometimes she made so many that she stored them in a box in our COLD attic. One year I remember that she discovered a box of Christmas cookies there at Easter. Smiles. Believe it or not, they were still good. The attic was VERY cold, and the season was such that it was almost like a refrigerator. Yes, Eileen, those were innocent days; and I too loved the anticipation. I enjoyed this poem.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely way to describe reminiscence, Eileen, with the ‘scents and smells of home cooking / Christmas cakes and fruit puddings’ – ‘feelgood spirit indeed!
ReplyDeleteOh Eileen ... this is such a warm and cozy poem ... just a delight! Thank you for this!
ReplyDeleteI am basking in the joy your poem exudes, Eileen. Now as an adult I feel those childhood days of innocence were god gifted.
