Garden Tree...

Life’s existence can be measured by habit and change
Surroundings influence moods and demeanour
Each seasonal transition brings about a new view
Garden trees become guides throughout the year
Amidst winter’s usual dreary, cold and frosty gloom
Trees with their emaciated branches stand all forlorn
Limbs outstretched as though seeking an embrace
It’s a stark time whilst nature’s ways take their course
Knowing that a springtime of revival will follow-on
There’s such hope to be gained from those early signs
Green buds offer an incalculable uplift when first seen
Shoots of new growth dressing scrawny woody arms
It’s the perfect moment to regain optimism’s energy
To feel connected to Mother earth and a spirituality
My garden tree provides a colourful canopy of shelter
Whenever summertime’s warmth shines through
Birdlife perches from dawn’s first light, until dusk
I observe each year’s passing within sight of this tree…

  1. I love the idea of garden trees being guides throughout the year! So true. It is lovely to watch them change through the seasons. I resonate with the heart-lift as the first buds appear in spring. It feels like a miracle every single time. Thanks for your lovely poem, Eileen.

  2. Yes, each seasonal transition brings about a new view. You are fortunate that you have your garden tree which marks the seasons in its unique way. Though perhaps the branches are forlorn, as you said, we know it won't be long before new growth brings that optimistic season we call spring. Beautifully penned, Eileen.

  3. "Life’s existence can be measured by habit and change" I like seeing how the garden tree fits into this. When I ived in Berkeley California it became quite clear to me that the visuals of 4 seasons, the habit of them, informed my happiness. Nicely done.

  4. What I like is your beautiful attitude to the garden tree; how 'change' happens all round and the tree's response in all seasons. Love the spring phase most. A lovely poem.
